California has tried to pass the Dream Act bill (AB 130 and AB 131) into law three times since 2006, but former Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill every time. Now, with a new Governor in office, Jerry Brown, the Dream Act may pass into law. Below are some quick facts about AB 130 and AB 131, and what you can do to support these bills if you would like to. For more detailed information, check out this site.
1. AB 130 will allow undocumented students who attend a California high school for at least three years, and who graduate from high school, to be eligible for scholarships to fund a college education (currently, undocumented students can not receive this money).
2. AB 131 will allow undocumented students who attend a California high school for at least three years, and who graduate from high school, to be eligible to receive state funded financial aid to pay for college (currently, undocumented students can not receive this money).
If you would like to email your Governor to let him know that you support this bill, you can email Governor Jerry Brown here. You can copy and paste the note below into the email.
Hello Governor Brown,
My name is (enter your name here). I’m writing to let you know that I support the California Dream Act—AB 130 and AB 131. It will allow some undocumented students greater access to education by allowing them to compete for scholarships and financial aid. Please vote yes on AB 130 and AB 131. Thank you!
